Getting fat fast

I was watching a pretty terrible but still quite fascinating doco on SBS on demand last night about the World’s Best Diets and Australia came in at the wrong end of the scale. Apparently our diet is worse than the UKs! The other shocking statistic that the doco quoted is that Aussies and Kiwis together have been piling on the fat like no other country in the world (since 1980). Unfortunately it wasn’t a made up stat as I found an article in the SMH from 2013 quoting a study that sounds pretty kosher. Which means that since 1980, an additional 13% of adults have moved into the obese bracket. Now as with the US, nearly 1 in 3 Australian adults are obese.

I’m fascinated by the global obesity epidemic. Given the number of docos around the place, I’m not alone. Sure they vary from personal diet science-lite programs to outright fat person torture porn reality shows to verging on conspiracy theory fat-sugar pushing food industry reveals, but they all have a common theme: the anxiety and fear that an expanding waist-line which for so long has been associated with good health, safety and contentment (at least in the developing world) has now become the opposite.

Anyway, given the trends, I am expecting the docos to keep being made for some time to come.
