Life’s a bitch

and then you die.

What’s more, there’s nothing afterwards. This Vale of Tears is all there is.

The only silver lining is that while you’re here, you get to choose your own adventure.

The CYOA book here is one of those few where the best ending (in this case the alien paradise planet Ultima) is not one that the reader can get to by conventionally following the page options provided.

To get to Ultima, the reader must “cheat” by flicking through every page. Ultima isn’t hidden that well: it is a double page spread that is obvious as soon as one starts looking.

But the reader has to choose to think outside the box.

So, life’s a bitch. And you will die. In the meantime, what are you going to do? How do you cheat?

  1. I have this book on my bookshelf right now – and 30-odd years later, number one son loves it too. I had forgotten that trick about getting to the ending. That’s a cool thing for an author to do, and for an editor/publisher to be willing to run with 🙂
